Project Details
The HortInvest project aimed to increase farmers' incomes, grow the relative contribution of the horticultural sector to the regional economy in Rwanda, and improve the food and nutrition security of the targeted households. The project covered six target districts in North west Rwanda.
Financials & Management
Client/Donor: Embassy of Kingdom of NL.
Total Budget: EUR 16.2 million.
HGT budget: EUR 250,000.
Objectives & Impact
- Increase horticultural sector's contribution to North West Rwanda's economy and farmers' incomes.
- Improve food and nutrition security for poor households.
- Develop market led horticultural production and high value exports.
- Enhance food security for rural households and urban consumers.
- Create an enabling environment for commercial horticultural development.
Achievements & Expansion
- 35,387 farming households with increased productivity & income (target was 44,000).
- 352 cooperatives and farmers' groups received support (target was 300).
- 4,373 hectares of farmland started using eco efficient methods (target was 2,000).
- EUR 16.6 million accrued income for farmers and SMEs (target was EUR 15.5 million).
- 92% of households moved to consuming fruits and vegetables in the programme districts (target was 50%).

Project Details
Reduce youth unemployment through a 4 month free competency based TVET training to equip students, practitioners, and farmers with entrepreneurship and horticultural skills to empower farming as a viable business.

- Conducted 4 month entrepreneurship courses at agricultural colleges.

- Provided competency based training for over 700 youth in entrepreneurship and horticulture.
- Created 100 internships or jobs with HGT and lead farmers.
